The skyline around Jerez, Arcos, Medina Sidonia and Puerto Real has changed dramatically in recent months, and Don Quixote would have a field day with the number of windmills that now mark the horizon across swathes of the province. As I write, the world leaders are just finishing their summit in Bali to try to thrash out a new agreement on the fight against global warming, so it seems a particularly appropriate time to look at what’s happening on our own doorstep in terms of finding an alternative to the conventional fuels that have dirtied the earth’s atmosphere for so many years now. We look at the different options for ‘green’ energy here in Cádiz, because as one expert put it, we have to believe in the problem, but we also have to believe in the solution.

It’s a problem that’s all too close to the heart of Clive Finlayson, the subject of our Profile this issue. His new book for the first time traces the impact that nature (and man) have had on the area that used to be known as Al-Andalus. It’s the fascinating story of our area, from its cork forests and olive groves to its birds, tuna, wolves and humans.
One problem many of us face when we move to this area is how to find work, especially work that pays well. Our Life Stories looks at a growing band of Brits who seem to have found the best of both worlds by living in the hills and along the coast of Cádiz while earning British-level salaries by working in Gibraltar.

Spice up your life with some sherry vinegar, plunge into Cádiz at carnival time, dip a toe into neighbouring Huelva – or simply enjoy a glass of wine watching the sun go down over the sea, as Katy Sender recommends in our Why I Love. It’s all in this winter issue of laluz – plus we begin a new series giving you some suggestions on the best Spanish films and the best books on Spain to try out. That’s if you have time after reading the magazine, of course.

A very Happy New Year to you all
